No Mow May!
Yes, it’s No Mow May time again! No Mow May is a great nationwide effort to stop mowing lawns (or part of your lawn if not mowing the whole lot is too daunting!) to enable Nature to thrive. By not mowing your lawn, you are allowing a unique ecosystem to develop and helping your local biodiversity.
Benefits of Not Mowing Your Lawn
- You will encourage the growth of the dandelions, daisies and clover already well-established in your lawn. You will be allowing them to flower and attract pollinators.
- You will encourage more insects to your garden.
- Unmown lawns create habitats for insects and the birds and bats that need them for food.
- It’s exciting to see the bees, butterflies, moths and hover flies arrive!
- It is also interesting to see what wildflowers will appear.
- You will save time with not having to mow.
- Your lawn will look so much prettier than just a bland swathe of green, devoid of life!

No Mow May is Not Just For May!
If you can, keep the lawn, or an area of lawn unmown after May – otherwise or your lovely new habitat will be gone, as will the insects and pollinators. If the thought of your whole lawn being wild for months is too much, then mow paths through it or select a specific area to be avoided when mowing. The rewards are worth it!
Encourage Friends and Family to Grow Wildflowers!
Spreading the word about the importance of wildflowers is so important. If you are getting married, consider giving your guests useful wildflower seed packet wedding favours. If you are a business, consider wildflower seed packets for your promotional events and giveaways (will also show clients and customers your great green credentials!) and, at Christmas, give seed packet Christmas cards as an alterantive to traditional cards or give as stocking fillers.
